since alot of bands transgress multiple genres, I don't really like to label. There's only one real genre to me, which is Rock. Here's what people would call my three favorite genres:

    1. Alternative - anything from The Smashing Pumpkins to Nine Inch Nails to Rage Against the Machine to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Tool.

    2. Metal - True metal, Ozzy w/Randy Rhoads & Jake Lee, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Guns N' Roses.

    3. Classic Rock - Just a name used to classify alot of older bands. The Beatles and Led Zeppelin come to mind, as well as The Rolling Stones and David Bowie.

I also think it's pretty funny when the metal bands I named are referred to as oldschool metal or stuff of the sort; as if any recent bands play a newer yet true metal.

    Note: nu-metal does not count.

    Agreed.

I don't think I could accurately put a top 3, because I'd be so iffy on where different bands fit in different genres. But to take a guess I'd say Rock, Punk, Alternative - in no particular order.
