Xvid is a codec. You use it to watch xvid videos.

Using it for what?
For decoding, you don't have much to do, usually, most players recognize it without fault.
For encoding, you need, well, and encoder.

Stated above, if you play any XviD, the codec will be automaticly loaded, and for encoding, like ripping, you can probably select what kind of codec you want to use. So in this case XviD.
