    Default My Direct3D's dead...

Ok, I just got back from a 2 week holiday, so I can't really remember what I last did on my computer, all I know is Direct3D applications and games won't work. DirectDraw, OpenGL and software rendered games still work though...

I already tried reinstalling DirectX9.0a but that didn't help at all. The microsoft.com/directX's troubleshooting was about as helpful as a radiator on a hot sunny day.

I'm out of ideas really, lol.

Here's the test results in diag:

Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
    Pentium 3 - 733 Mhz
    384mb RAM
    Geforce4 Ti4200 128mb
Never had problems like this before.

    1. Heres where the good old recover comes in handy. Just recover to the last day you know all your drivers worked.

1A. http://www.3dcenter.org/downloads/di...ninstaller.php Get this file unistall directx and then goto START->Control Panel->SYSTEM->Hardware->Device Manger-> and delete anything in Display Adapter.

2A. Reboot your system. reinstall your video card drivers first. Perferablly one that is rated good. (guru3d.com rates video drivers)

3A. Now reinstall Directx8.1 or 9.0A which ever you want.

If one of these solutions don't work... You can punch me in the face!

And if they don't work (and they should ) ensure that D3D acceleration is enabled in DXDiag. If it says enabled by the side of it, then click it and it will enable itself (DXdiag is a bit wierd).

Grantu, thanks, but it seems the uninstall directx program is for XP, and I have 98SE... Forgot to mention that... Would it still work though?

Oh, and when you say I should recover my last drivers, how do you go on about doing that? Or is that an XP thing?

Well, I guess you can slap me now. windows 98se hmmm....

That unistaller will not uninstal dx9 from any 9x systems. People usually don't run dx9 on a 9x system. You'll be hard pressed to find a uninstaller for a 9x system.

As for getting the drivers go to Guru3d.com and get your video card drivers from them. Or just use the ones that came with your video card.

All I can give you is to do an actual format. When and if you format DO NOT install directx9 on your computer, if your going to be installing 9x,me, or nt operating system. Stay with 8.1

*note* if you do decide to not listen and still want directx9.0a then I recommend installing some sort of system restore on your system. check this out:

Meh... looks like Microsoft screws me over once again...

    EDIT: Ok 3 things:

    1) If MS says that Directx 9.0a works on windows 98, why wouldn't it work? (This could be a sarcastic rethorical question, buy it's not )

    2) DX9.0a has worked fine until now. I've had it since it was released.

    3) Where can I still get DirectX 8.1? And could I simply overwrite 9.0a with the 8.1 installer?

I don't think you can overwrite DX9 with an older version... do this:

    1. Create a Win98 boot disk if you don't already have one. I would assume that you know how to do this, but if not then tell me.

    2. Boot from the floppy disk to get to a command prompt and type "scanreg/restore" without the quotes.

Hopefully there will be a registry backup listed that predates your excursion, which lasted for two weeks, right? Anyway, choose the oldest backup from the list, reboot, change boot priority to the hard drive, and see if it affected DirectX.

Sorry, didn't work Magus. When I start with the boot disk, and run scanreg, I get an error that drive h:\ is not accesible(?). I should probably let you know that I have 4 hard-drives and a cd-rom drive. The boot disk creates an extra virtual drive right after my physical hard-drives, so h:\ would be my cd-rom drive...

If on the other hand, I start my computer and hold down [CTRL] to boot up in DOS, I can run scanreg, but when I try to restore an old backup, it starts loading, and in the end it simply says: "Failed to restore cab backup file." (Or something along those lines.)

Ok, never mind, fixed the problem *phew*

I found an uninstall program for DirectX 9.0 for win98. I also used a program called detonator destroyer. Then I went on and installed old detonator drivers and directx 8.1...

    At least everything works now.

    Thanks for helping everyone
