/me remembers about 'Twister'

Twister. It was dull, and I had to watch it at the cinema for two consecutive birthday parties... Ugh.

I don't agree with that at all. Spiderman was a very well put together movie, and aside from the occasional character-building scene between Peter and MJ, the movie moved along at a perfectly acceptable pace. You and NaturalMystic probably have to see a big pretty explosion every 12 seconds or your ADD kicks in and you find your focus wandering...

I agree, I enjoyed Spidey, but I know a lot of people who detested it with a passion... Which is a shame, because not only as a comic book adaptation but as a summer blockbuster I found it to be better than your average, and highly entertaining...

Right. I can understand that there are those who disliked the changes, such as Spideys organic web-shooters, and Green Goblins costume to an extent, but I don't understand how this movie could be considered boring in the least. Meh, I guess these two are in the minority, as it's done HUGE box office worldwide, and y'know the numbers don't lie...

Coyote Ugly hit at the box office, Britney Spears fills stadiums. Reality TV shows are some of the highest rated on television. I'm not saying I disagree with you about Spiderman, just asking you to please never to use that argument...

Citizen Kane, Gone With the Wind, and West Side Story. I watched the latter two in a row, big mistake.

Ok, so because you have something against Britney Spears ( I don't much like her either...) I can't use a perfectly valid argument? C'mon. Same goes with Coyote Ugly and Reality shows. It doesn't matter that you personally think all of the above is reprehensible, the numbers don't lie. Does that make them good? Perhaps not to you personally, but it does make them good enough to put you in the minority, so my argument stands.
And trying to equate a quality film with Britney Spears, Coyote Ugly and Reality shows is like trying to equate Barney the Purple fucking Dinosaur to the works of William Shakespear. It just doesn't work....:\

The argument is valid in the case of the movie I've limited it to. I'm not making the wide-spread assertion that everything that's done huge numbers is great, which is the assumption you've seemed to have lept to. I'm merely pointing out Spidermans box office as an indication of it's quality, because generally speaking films don't go on to make almost half a billion dollars if they aren't any good. Word of mouth and critics opinions mean alot in the industry, and if the movie truly sucked and was panned by it's audience and the critics, it's box office would've tapered off at some point, rather then remaining strong for it's entire run. Spiderman went on to do HUGE numbers worldwide, proving that it was not only a film people wanted to see, but that it had the staying power to keep doing huge numbers because it was a quality film. You don't see shitty movies pulling in the numbers Spiderman did, especially after the initial hype has worn off. Coyote Ugly did a total of sixty million dollars worldwide in it's theatrical run, and while it may have hit strong, it's numbers quickly dropped due to negative word of mouth and less then sterling critical acclaim (It's rated very poorly on almost every review site availabe on the web. Do a search.). It started strong then tapered off, as shitty, overhyped movies always do.
At any rate, my argument stands that if Spiderman where indeed a terrible peace of film making, it's box office would've dropped after it's initial hype wore off, rather then leading the film to huge worldwide success in the box office and with viewers. So again, Spidermans box office doesn't lie.

As for this arguments relevancy in "intelligent discussion", there is nothing that cannot be made to be relevant to any discussion. Just because you don't understand it, or happen to disagree with it, doesn't mean it has no place in this dicussion...

Johnny has a perfectly valid point. Popularity does not equate to quality.

Britney Spears is not popular because of her singing... "talent", she is popular because of somewhat unscrupulous and highly efficient marketing techniques. You know what I'm talking about here. Same goes for Coyote Ugly and reality shows. The hype and "ooooh, tihs is a good tihng i like it so much LOL ROFLF ddjkdlvkldfk" factors also contribute to elevate absolute shit to fame and fortune.

As for Spiderman, he wasn't saying it was bad at all. He simply said that the argument of "the more viewers, the better the movie" is without foundation and should not be used in intelligent discussion.

Hey, how'd you get your post above his?

Anyway, what I'm saying has nothing to do with how many people went to see it and how long it kept selling well. The quality of the film never changes, no matter how many people go to see it, no matter how many people think it's good, no matter how many people think it's shit, it always stays the same, right? So the numbers don't have anything to do with how good the film is.

That's all I'm saying, not that Spiderman didn't deserve the numbers, or the praise, just that numbers don't prove anything...

I've been noticing this happening a bit, e.g someone replys to a topic but their post is actually above the original post, kind of confused me for a second. I wonder what's causing it...

Just so this post is kind of on topic, what Johnny said in his previous post is exactly what i'd say.

I found both LOTR films to be boring, with the exception of a few scenes. Star Wars Episode 2 was pretty boring until the ending. (Loved that last bit with the war and all.) Tomb Raider was horrible, and I couldn't find a reason to see the second film.

By the way, did you know that Tomb Raider is the most unsuccesful movie to have a sequal? When I say unsuccesful, I mean how many people actually liked it, because I'm sure alot of people saw it.

Spiderman was alright. The first half really kept me entertained, but the I didn't like the second half. In the first half he's still trying to get Jane, he's still experimenting with his powers, and it was funny and all. The last part reminded me of Power Rangers. Too childish for my taste. I hated that Goblin costume... it was so incredibly fake.

Yeah, I noticed that change, but I felt it actually made a lot more sense, than him just making the webbing himself and using cartridges of the stuff. Cool film though Spiderman

Boring film, well not seen too many boring films but The fifth element was one of the only films where I nearly fell asleep whilst watching it.
