    Default Hard drive enclosure

Hey--it's been a while since I've been around here, but I did have a question regarding something:

I have a laptop that has failed, and I have taken out the hard drive and placed it in an external hard drive enclosure. I can access it via another computer. Unfortunately, it seems that previous files that were specific to an account (with a password) can no longer be accessed. How might I get around this?

    Hey Laguna!

Do you know where the files were stored? If you do, you could browse your way to that folder, right click on it and select Properties, then click on the Security tab. Here, add the account details (username and password) that the files were stored under.

Also, if you don't have an security tab in the folder properties, double-click on My Computer, Go to Tools, Folder Options, View, and then uncheck "Use simple file sharing".

    I hope this will help.

crusher, the metal gear gas n00blet is probably right. however, if he doesn't help, we need to know: can you access the drive at all? do you get an error message or any message at all?

He his right, now please proceed to hang yourself in the living room.
However, if you don't want to do that to every file, in the security tab go to "Advanced..." and tick "Replace blah blah blah". Then click apply.

Somehow you might also need to become the owner of the files to put your right on it, i'm going to install VMwatre and load up Windows XP in engish to see the correct words so I could help you and whatnot.

You fail. (focus on the dot plz) but you know it would just be too much of a pain to quote why.

    Hey crusher, polobunny,

Thanks for all the ideas. It was relatively simple to find a solution with your suggestions and help. I just had to modify securities and proceed to take ownership of the files.

    So problem solved.
