    Default Hard Disk Partition Problem

    Hi There Guys.

I am having some trouble with my hard disk.

I bought this hard disk about like approx 3-4 years back. This is a 20 GB Samsung hard disk and my hardware guy made THREE partitions in it namely C, D, and E.

The main problem comes to the amount of disk space he assigned to each of them. He gave C drive only 2 gb and D drive 8 gb and E drive 8 gb.

Now, I am having problem with C drive. Its getting filled up and there is only like 40 to 50 mb left in it and my system shows that its critically low and that I should remove some programs from C drive. But there are no programs installed on C drive that I can remove. All of them are on the D and E Drive.

I don't know what to do now. I have cleared all the temporary internet files and all the tmp files and the temp folder but still there is only 40 to 50 mb space left.

I am having lots of space in D and E drives namely approx 4 Gb in each of them.

Can anything be done to this. I don't wanna format my drive.

Is there a software of some kind that can "SAFELY" increase the disk space of C drive and reduce that same amount of disk space from other drives without any damage to the OS or other programs installed.

I am really very sorry for writting this post so BIG.

Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanx in Advance....

You will need to format your HD whatever you do sorry, if you do not want to format your HD you are stuck, but you could just backup everything on CD maybe that you don't want to loose.

But to get rid of the partitions in Windows 98/95 you need to boot to dos and use the command fdisk then remove all partition then once there all gone resetup the partitions to use up all the space available then activate it.

    Then format and reinstall windows.

The only other way is to borrow a HD from a friend to back up your HD to first (Installed programs will stop working after that anyway so just backup anything that is not reinstallable) [Remove friends HD now] then fdisk and format your own HD reinstall windows and [Reconnect friends HD] copy everything back

i believe you can do that using partition resizer .
it's a dos program, and it's very easy to use. copy the file to the win98 bootdisk, boot the disk, and run "presizer" at A prompt.
and you can move around the size of the disks.
    hope it helps

I am using Windows Mellinneum Edition. Will there be any problems with that...???

And If I use Partision Resizer, will there be any "data loss" or problem with the data that is stored on my HDD.

opps. i guess i wasn't getting it right. sorry about that.
if you want to extend the size of your partition, you'll have to re-partition it. like zorlon said, use fdisk or partition magic. also, u can use ghost to backup your files.

Changing Partition sizes will always be risky for data I strongly recomend a backup to be done. It may take a while, but it's worth it if you don't want to loose any important data

Fdisk is primitive... it will not do exactly what ravi wants. And I already recommended Partition Magic to ravi in a PM because you can resize partitions in minutes (among the many other things the app can do) without data loss... but, Partition Magic is very expensive and there is no free trial version of the program at PowerQuest' website. So we need a free alternative. I don't know of any, honestly. What is the official website of Partition Resizer?

So if an alternative to Parition Magic is not found, ravi will have to do what Zorlon suggested, which is to get a second hard drive and back everything up to it temporarily while reformatting the first drive and recreating partitions with Fdisk.

Way Cool torpedo009. Thanx man. You saved me a lot of time and from a lot of mess.

I will try it out as soon as I get my cable net at home.

Thanx again torpedo009 and you get a 5 vote for that.

Edit: I followed the site you gave and I gave them the details they required and my email ID and then they sent a mail with my email ID as the login ID and a password with a link to log in.

After I logged in, I got a page with the all the Demos available for download and GUESS WHAT.....it was the demo of Partion Magic 8. SUPERCOOL....Its a 23 MB file

There was this one condition that my password will be valid for only the next three days and so I am downloading it at a friends PC and am already half way through downloading it.

    Thanx again all you guys.

i'm glad you've solved your problem ravih.
but next time you might want to try presizer, 'cause it's free, small, and fast.
check out the official link and just read about it a little bit.
